Wow, this has been some year and it's only the beginning of May! Hope everyone is staying healthy and safe. I have a little bit of catching up to do on my blog. Here's the latest news. Be sure to let me know if you have news to share.
Visits
Bob Tillman visited us in Fergus Falls, MN at the end of February. As always, we had a great time visiting and eating too much food.
Scotland Trip
Bob and I were planning a trip to Scotland to take part in the McGillivray Family Reunion. Ellen Jane McGillivray was the mother of Charlie Olin and these would be very distant cousins. We learned a couple weeks ago that the reunion was cancelled (thank you virus!) But we're still thinking if things settle down enough by mid-July that we would still attempt a trip. Wish us luck! We will definitely be visiting the old MacGillivray stomping grounds of our ancestors.
Jerry and Abby Olin Moving to Minnesota
Jerry and Abby Olin have purchased a home in South Minneapolis for their retirement in about two years. Michele Erving was their realtor and did a wonderful job. I hope you will consider her if you have any realty needs in the future.

Irish Cousins
For many, many years I've been searching for our Irish ancestors. This is the Egan family and they were Grandma Vivian's g-grandparents, John Egan and Catherine unknown. They supposedly came from County Cork but I'm not sure of that just yet. However, thanks to DNA I just linked up with a distant cousin in County Tipperary and we're hoping to establish that connection soon. I'm not sure yet if we are related through the Egans or through Catherine's line yet. We know nothing about her at this point.
As a point of interest, Catherine is the mtDNA direct ancestor for a lot of us. All of Grandma Vivian's children inherited the mtDNA as it is passed down from mother to mother. The men in the family (Chuck and Jerry) inherited it but could not pass it on as their children would have inherited their own mother's mtDNA. So, direct females from Grandma on down do have the same mtDNA. Confused? I'll use me as an example: My mother, Janet, inherited that mtDNA and it was passed down to me and my siblings. My brother inherited it but his daughter would have inherited her own mother's mtDNA. But me and my sisters passed it down to our children and the female children passed it down to their children. So, these are the first cousins who inherited it and passed it on to their female children: Cheryll, Gail, Kathy, Ruth, Jane, Chris, Cathy, Deb, Patty, and Amy.
Grandma's sister Florence had a son, her brother James could not pass it on, and the oldest sister, Mildred passed it on to her daughter who had sons. So, that mtDNA line died out. It's actually a pretty rare haplogroup.
Chelsea Montgomery Receives Scholarship
Chelsea is the daughter of Michele Erving and granddaughter of Mike Erving.
The recipient of the Janette Strathy Aviation Scholarship is Chelsea
Montgomery, from Bloomington, MN. While at Thomas Jefferson H.S. Chelsea
participated in speech club, was a member of the National Honor Society
and did volunteer work. She also took Post-Secondary Enrollment Option
classes during her last two years of H.S. She then attended the
University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management majoring in
entrepreneurial management and political science. While in business
school and working three different jobs, she purchased a share in a
flying club at Crystal Airport in 2018 and received her Private Pilot
license in 2019. Upon graduating from the U of M she was accepted in the
flight-training program at ATP Flight School in Mesa, AZ. She is
currently working on her commercial ticket and says the Janette Strathy
Scholarship will help her accelerate the pace of flight training. She
wants to get her CFI and instruct at ATP. Her ultimate goal is to one
day fly commercially, volunteer to fly with the Veterans Airlift
Command, and start an aviation related business, using her background in
business.
